Leopold FC980 Review: 2 Years with a Premium Mechanical Keyboard

After more than 2 years of using the Leopold FC980 mechanical keyboard, I'm still amazed by its quality and the experience it provides. Although it's not a gaming keyboard, the FC980 remains one of my favorite high-end mechanical keyboards.

The first thing that attracted me was the FC980's classic design. It reminds me of the legendary Mitsubishi rubber keyboards from the past, evoking a sense of nostalgia without feeling outdated. With its rectangular shape, elegant gray body, black keys with light blue lettering, it creates a harmonious whole that fits perfectly in any modern workspace. This color combination is not only aesthetically pleasing but also enhances contrast, making it easier to see and type on the keys, especially during long work hours.

The keycaps have a matte plastic coating that feels great to the touch. Over time, I've developed a habit of fiddling with the keys when I'm not typing. Surprisingly, after 2 years of use, the matte layer hasn't worn off at all. With my habit of constantly touching the keys, other keycaps would probably be shiny by now.

However, the downside of this matte finish is that it tends to collect dust in the crevices. Initially, I was diligent about removing the keys to clean them, as the keyboard came with a key puller. But now, I've become a bit lazy and only do a thorough cleaning occasionally.

In terms of sturdiness, I find the Leopold FC980 truly superior. When pressing the keys, the travel is very clear and doesn't feel off-center. What's particularly impressive is the key sensitivity - just a light press is enough for it to register.

The FC980's keycaps are also very high-quality, made from durable PBT plastic that doesn't fade or wear off. Combined with the matte plastic material and the solid typing feel, the user experience becomes even more excellent.

For the switches, my FC980 uses Cherry MX Brown, which provides a balanced typing feel with moderate noise, perfect for working in an office environment. The key travel is designed to be slightly shorter than usual, enhancing the solid feel and refining the user experience.

However, the FC980 does have a few minor drawbacks. It only has a Micro USB connection port instead of the more modern USB-C. Additionally, the keyboard doesn't have backlighting, which can be challenging when working in low-light environments.

Nevertheless, after more than 2 years of use, the FC980 still provides me with an excellent experience. It's a perfect combination of classic design and high-quality construction, suitable for those who want a specialized mechanical keyboard for work. The Leopold FC980 isn't just a work tool, but also a piece of art on my desk.
